The Difference Between Marketing and Public Relations and How They Are Used Together

Many of the tools used by marketing and public relations(PR) professionals overlap, but they still have differing goals and characteristics.

I can’t remember the first time I came across the easy way to remember and understand the difference between marketing and PR.

“I have heard of that company and I trust them.”

“i heard of that company and i trust them.”

I Heard = Marketing

I Trust = Company

Combined, they are significantly stronger!

Remember the best marketing and PR take time to put themselves into their public’s shoes. Most people will go with what they know, and if they don’t know, they’ll go with what a trusted friend suggests.

Marketing is rather quick to build and turn around. Public Relations takes time to build strong relationships, though once built, these relationships are your strongest way to get more business.

Marketing is also trackable. A business can track the flow of traffic after an advertisement. Public Relations is harder to track. Owners will look for hearing more word of mouth referrals, as an example.

I never understood the point of only investing in one or the other. Both are highly important. When combined, they are unstoppable.

You don’t have to get a degree to understand either of these! You just have to get good at putting yourself in your customer’s shoes!
